The Relationship Between Ebike Battery Lifespan And Charging Cycles

Aug 16, 2024

Understanding Charging Cycles

Many people feel that repeatedly charging an electric vehicle battery shortens its lifespan. While battery life is limited, what matters most is the depth of drain and recharge, not the number of charges. A whole discharge and recharge cycle is considered one cycle, regardless of how many times the charger is plugged in.

For example, if you ride your e-bike until the battery is 40% charged, then charge it completely, and then ride it again until the battery is 60% charged, that is one cycle. The total amount of energy consumed across several charges equals one full discharge and recharge.

Battery Types and Lifespans

Electric vehicles typically employ three types of batteries: lead acid, lithium-ion, and sodium-ion.

Lead-acid batteries are more frequent in low-cost models and electric motorcycles.
Lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries are used in luxury vehicles and electric cars.
A battery's lifespan is determined on its chemistry and design, however lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries can often sustain thousands of cycles before seeing substantial degradation.

Tips to Extend Battery Life

To maximize the lifespan of your battery, follow these guidelines:

When to Charge: Lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries can be charged anytime it is convenient. However, for lead-acid batteries, charge them when the battery level falls to 20-30%.

Charging Time: Avoid overcharging. Once the battery is fully charged, remove it from the charger. Overcharging can cause heat and damage to the battery.
Storage: If you won't be using your electric vehicle for a while, charge the battery to about 50% capacity and then store it in a cool, dry place. This is especially critical for lead-acid batteries, which tend to self-discharge over time.

In conclusion.

The number of complete discharge and recharge cycles, rather than the number of times you put in the charger, determines how long an Ebike Battery will last. You can dramatically improve the life of your battery by understanding its chemistry and charging it properly.
