Common Types of Electric Bicycle Battery

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular choice for electric bicycles due to their high energy density, lightweight design, and long cycle life. They offer good power output and can be found in different chemistries like lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (LiNiCoAlO2).

Lithium Polymer (LiPo) Batteries
Lithium polymer batteries are a type of lithium-ion battery that uses a polymer electrolyte. They are known for their flexibility in shape and size, making them suitable for custom battery pack designs. LiPo batteries have a high energy density and can provide high discharge rates, but they require careful handling and charging to prevent safety issues.

Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries
NiMH batteries were commonly used in electric bicycles before the rise of lithium-ion batteries. They have a lower energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries, but they are more affordable and have a longer cycle life. NiMH batteries are considered to be more environmentally friendly than some other battery types.

Lead-Acid Batteries
Lead-acid batteries are the oldest type of rechargeable battery and are less commonly used in electric bicycles nowadays. They have a lower energy density, shorter cycle life, and higher weight compared to lithium-ion batteries. However, they are still used in some budget-friendly electric bicycles due to their lower cost.

What Size Battery is Best for an Electric Bicycle?

The size of battery that is best for an electric bicycle does really depend on a couple of factors. The first being your budget: there’s no point in going over budget if it’ll be a push for you financially because you like the look of an e-bike with a higher voltage.

In addition, the higher the voltage of the battery, the more expensive the battery will be for you to charge. A thirstier battery will increase your energy bills.

Next, another important factor to consider is the type of riding you will be looking to do. If you don’t want performance and just care about leisure riding then a 36v or even 48v would be more than adequate for you.

However, if you were wanting out and out performance from an electric bicycle, coupled with an increased range, then the higher voltages, like 52v, will suit you better. Thus, it really just depends on your own personal needs.

Factors Influencing the Performance of Electric Bicycle Battery

Battery Capacity
The capacity of the battery, typically measured in watt-hours (Wh) or ampere-hours (Ah), determines the amount of energy the battery can store. A higher capacity battery will provide more range and allow for longer rides before requiring a recharge.

Battery Chemistry
Different battery chemistries, such as lithium-ion (Li-ion), lithium polymer (LiPo), or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), have different characteristics and performance. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in electric bicycles due to their high energy density, lightweight nature, and good cycle life.

Voltage
The voltage of the battery pack affects the power output and performance of the electric bicycle. Higher voltage batteries can deliver more power to the motor, resulting in faster acceleration and higher top speeds.

Battery Management System (BMS)
The BMS is responsible for monitoring and controlling various aspects of the battery, such as cell balancing, temperature regulation, and protection against overcharging or over-discharging. A well-designed BMS can optimize battery performance, enhance safety, and prolong the battery's lifespan.

Temperature
Battery performance is sensitive to temperature. Extreme cold or hot temperatures can affect the battery's capacity, voltage, and overall performance. It's important to operate the battery within the recommended temperature range specified by the manufacturer.

Cycling and Depth of Discharge (DoD)
Cycling refers to the process of charging and discharging the battery. The number of charge cycles a battery can undergo before its capacity significantly degrades varies depending on the battery chemistry. Additionally, deep discharges (discharging the battery to very low levels) can accelerate the aging process of the battery.

Charging and Discharging Rate
The rate at which the battery is charged and discharged can impact its performance. Rapid charging or discharging at high currents can generate heat and potentially reduce battery life. It's important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for charging and discharging rates.

Rider Weight and Riding Conditions
The weight of the rider and the terrain on which the electric bicycle is used can affect battery performance. Riding uphill or carrying heavy loads will require more power from the battery, reducing the overall range.

Maintenance and Care
Proper maintenance and care of the battery, such as regular cleaning, avoiding extreme temperatures, and storing the battery correctly when not in use, can help maintain its performance and prolong its lifespan.

Age and Battery Degradation
Over time, batteries naturally degrade, resulting in reduced capacity and performance. The rate of degradation depends on factors such as the number of charge cycles, storage conditions, and overall battery quality.

Tips for Extending the Life of your Electric Bicycle Battery

Try Not to Discharge the Battery Below 20%.
Deep discharge makes the battery too difficult to use and reduces its capacity in future. A lithium battery starts to oxidise, which has a negative effect on capacity as well as battery life. In the case of switching off (e.g. in winter), it is recommended that the battery be fully charged at least once every 90 days.

Do Not Charge the Battery Immediately After Riding.
The battery should cool down before charging. If we start charging a heated battery, it will not be able to cool down at all, and degradation will be much faster.

Do Not Fully Charge the Battery If It is Not Necessary.
When charging the battery above 80% of its capacity (around 40V), the internal resistance of the battery increases, the battery heats up more and this significantly accelerates the degradation process.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures.
High temperatures and frost affect performance and shorten battery life. Never store the battery outside where it will be exposed to temperatures below 0ºC. Similarly, we recommend not storing the battery at temperatures above 30ºC. Furthermore, avoid long parking under direct sunlight.

Factors to Consider When Buying Your Electric Bicycle Battery

Capacity
Battery capacity is usually measured in watt-hours. Watt-hours tell you how much power the battery can hold. The more watt-hours a battery has, the larger the electric bicycle’s range — how far you can ride it on a single battery charge.
You can calculate watt-hours by multiplying an e-bike’s amp hours by its voltage. Amp-hours (Ah) refers to how big your e-bike’s gas tank is.

Weight
Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better when it comes to e-bike batteries. While a big battery may have more capacity, it will also weigh more. This can add a burden to the electric bicycle and reduce the range.
A bulky electric bicycle battery can also impede bike performance and handling. For example, a heavy battery can disrupt the e-bike’s equilibrium, so it’s unbalanced.
Finally, a heavy electric bicycle battery makes your entire e-bike less portable. This is a major consideration if you have to lug your e-bike up and down stairs.

Voltage
You’ll see electric bicycle batteries listed with a “V” measure — that “V” stands for volt. Voltage determines how much power is delivered to the bike motor and affects how quickly the e-bike can accelerate.
Electric battery voltage is comparable to a car’s horsepower (how much power the car engine produces). The higher the voltage, the more power the bike has. This means it can reach high speeds faster.

Charging Time
Electric bicycle batteries also differ in terms of charging time (how long you have to plug them into the charger to “refuel” them). Charging time is determined by the battery’s capacity and charger traits like voltage settings and output current.
If you’re planning a longer ride, it’s important to know the battery’s range and its charging time. You don’t want to hit an unexpected delay because your battery runs out, and you have to wait for it to recharge.

Maintenance Requirements
Different electric bicycle batteries require different levels of maintenance. For example, a nickel-cadmium battery will require more care than a standard lithium-ion model.
That said, all batteries require some attention. If you don’t care for your battery, you run the risk of shortening its life span and having to buy a new battery sooner.
